ABOUT

The Twin Lakes Beach Tote has plenty of room for everything you need to bring with you on your next beach adventure. Some special features include all-around pockets and wide, comfortable straps reinforced with a slip stitch detail that simultaneously creates pockets and provides extra durability. Most of the bag is worked in the round but the straps and base are worked in rows, providing an interesting textural pop when combined with the slip stitches.

My family cabin overlooks Twin Lakes Beach, Manitoba. I completed this project on this very beach and you can see a few photos of it in the background of these product shots. It seemed like the perfect name for this beach tote!

MATERIALS

Yarn: Bulky*—Lion Brand Rewind in 2 shades: Moto Jacket and Elm

* Note that this yarn is labeled a bulky weight yarn but feels more like a worsted weight yarn

  • 70% Polyester, 30% Viscose
  • 219 yds (200 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g) skein
  • Find this yarn on lionbrand.com.

Yardage:

Color A: Moto Jacket – 4 skeins/770 yds (705 m)

Color B: Elm – 5 skeins/1000 yds (915 m)

If substituting Rewind, choose any similar, category #4 worsted weight or category #5 bulky weight tape yarn that matches gauge. Non-tape yarns will work too. Always swatch before beginning to ensure you are happy with the resulting fabric.

Hooks:

  • Main Gauge Hook - Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Smaller Hook - Size U.S. F/5 (3.75 mm) or size 0.5-1 mm smaller than Main Gauge hook

Notions: Tapestry needle, several locking stitch markers to help with placing the straps

PATTERN NOTES

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row in italics. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row.

Right Side: The “right side” of your fabric is the side that faces you while crocheting the body of the bag; however, there is no “right side” or “wrong side” to the straps.

Construction: You will begin with the inner layer of the bag. The base is crocheted first, then the sides are worked around the perimeter of the base, in a spiral. The outer layer of the bag is worked next in the same way. Two identical straps are crocheted and then slip stitched to the bag, securing all three layers of fabric while simultaneously reinforcing the straps, providing a decorative detail, and creating the pockets.
