MATERIALS

Yarn: Worsted held double–Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, shown in colorways “Taupe” and “Camel”

  • 100% Cotton
  • 186 yds (170 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g) skein
  • Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes available in your region
  • Find the full one-stop-shop crochet kit here!

Yardage: 5 skeins or 775 yds (709 m)

Yarn Substitution: Substitute Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton with any similar medium, worsted weight (category #4) yarn that matches gauge. Cottons will work best for this project, particularly those that feel “stiff” to lend some structure to your finished bag. Worsted weight yarn held double is equivalent to 1 strand of most bulky weight yarns. Note that worsted weight is often referred to as “aran” in the U.K., or “10-ply” in Australia.

Hooks:

  • Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge, used for base and handles
  • Size U.S. H/8 (5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge, used for textured body panel

Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, and at least 6 locking stitch markers

GAUGE

Gauge for Base and Handles (Smaller Hook)

4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = 15 sc and 15 rnds, lightly blocked.

Gauge for Textured Body (Larger Hook)

4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = approximately 5.5 V-sts and 10.5 rnds, lightly blocked.

Two Hook Sizes: Note that there are two hook sizes used for this bag; a smaller hook for the base and handles, and a larger hook for the textured stitch pattern that makes up the body of the bag. The gauge is provided for both stitch patterns to ensure you choose the proper hooks for your unique tension.

For Swatch

Ch 29 using larger hook.

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, sk next 2 ch, *V-st in next ch, sk next 2 ch; rep from * to last st, hdc in last st turn. [8 V-sts, 2 hdc]

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in first hdc, V-st in each ch2-sp across, hdc in last hdc, turn.

Rep Row 2 until you have at least 15 rows completed. Measure the innermost 4” (10 cm) of your blocked swatch to get the most accurate measurement.

PATTERN NOTES

Skill Level: Intermediate

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row/round. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row/round.

Right Side / Wrong Side: The right side is the side that faces you as you crochet the base and the handles.

Yarn Held Double: To increase strength and durability, this entire bag is worked with yarn held double, meaning two strands of yarn are held together and used as if they were one. Note that two worsted weight strands held double is approximately equivalent to 1 strand of bulky weight yarn.

Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch anywhere in this pattern.

Construction: The base of this bag is crocheted from the bottom-up in a spiral, increasing each round by 6 stitches. Once the proper bag circumference is reached, you will crochet straight for several rounds without any shaping. Next, you will crochet the textured panel that makes up the body of the bag, which is worked in back-and-forth joined rounds. Two sections of this textured panel will be extended on either side of the bag, providing shaping to the handle area. Lastly, you will crochet the handles.

Stitch Chart: A full stitch chart for the base of this bag can be found on page 8. Be sure to reference the chart in addition to the written instructions if you ever find your stitch counts are off!
