ABOUT

The structured base of the Bellflower Bucket Bag can handle all of your everyday essentials while maintaining its shape. The additional materials used—including a leather drawstring, a leather purse strap and a wooden bag base—each contribute to the elevated, store-bought look of this bucket bag. Whether you’re out for a night on the town or lounging by the pool, the Bellflower Bucket Bag will keep your belongings secure while adding a beachy vibe to any summer outfit.

This is the sister pattern to the Bellflower Bucket Hat (found here)—a matching hat written for five sizes using the same lace stitch pattern!

Stitch Chart: This pattern includes a comprehensive stitch chart for the lace panel.

Photo Tutorial: This pattern includes a full tutorial page (4 photos) explaining how to work the magic ring (the beginner-friendly technique that begins the bag base).

MATERIALS

Yarn: DK—Hobbii Rainbow 8/8 in colorway “03”

  • 100% Cotton
  • 82 yds (75 m) per 1.75 oz (50 g) skein
  • Find this yarn on hobbii.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes available in your region.

Yardage Required: 6 skeins or approximately 425 yds (389 m)

If you choose to crochet the drawstring instead of using the leather drawstring option, you will need (approximately) an additional 15 yds (14 m).

Yarn Substitution: Visit knitsnknots.ca/bellflower-bucket-bag for an extensive list of yarn substitutes and yarns used during pattern testing. Substitute Hobbii Rainbow 8/8 with any similar light DK-weight (category #3) yarn that matches gauge. Cottons will work best for this project, particularly those that feel “stiff,” to lend some structure to your finished bag. Note that DK weight is often referred to as “8-ply” in Australia.

Hook: Size U.S. F/5 (3.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle and 2 locking stitch markers, 1 wooden basket base/bottom measuring approximately 7.75 to 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter (if using a basket base without holes around the perimeter, you will also need fabric glue), 1 removable crossbody purse strap (often called “purse replacement strap” with snap hooks on each end to be clipped to your bag; sample shown has adjustable length ranging from 43 to 51 inches [109–130 cm] with a strap width of 0.47 inch [1.2 cm]), a leather drawstring* measuring approximately 34 inches (86 cm) in length

*Note that instructions are included within the pattern to crochet a drawstring if preferred, so the leather drawstring is optional.

GAUGE

For Swatch: Work first 8 rnds of Base, creating a small circle. First 8 rnds of circle should measure approximately 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) in diameter, blocked. Do not cut your yarn once you have completed your swatch; keep the yarn attached to the skeins. Once your swatch matches gauge, you can proceed with the remainder of the pattern using this swatch.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

See diagram in listing photos.

The base of the bag measures approximately 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter (Measurement A). The finished bag measures approximately 12 inches (30 cm) in height (Measurement B).

PATTERN NOTES

Skill Level: Intermediate

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each round. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous round.

Right Side/Wrong Side: The side that faces you as you crochet each round of single crochet is the right side.

Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch unless otherwise indicated.

Joined Rounds/Spiral: This bag is worked in a spiral with the exception of the lace panel, which is worked in joined, turned rounds.

Construction: The Bellflower Bucket Bag is crocheted seamlessly in the round in a spiral, worked from the bottom up. You will begin with the base, increasing until reaching the proper diameter, then you will work several rounds without any increases to form the sides of your bag while also integrating the lace panel into your stitches. A round of eyelets is worked near the top of the bag into which you will weave a leather (or crocheted) drawstring to cinch your bag closed. A wooden basket base and a removable purse strap are added last. Note that the lace panel is worked in joined, turned rounds, while the remainder of the bag is worked in a spiral.

Base Stitch Count: Each round of the base increases by 7 stitches.
